Almost exactly a year after taking Glowy White Butterfly during the summer in the gardens of my college, I took this picture in the same location, on the same plants. I almost never post two images of the same basic idea, since I prefer to keep each image new and different (except for the occasional series of three if I feel they are truly better together than separate). But this time I feel that it's rather appropriate. Not only is it a shot I'm extremely proud of (as I was of the previous year's), but I feel it somewhat reflects the growth of my insect photography skills in the past year. I only started seriously looking at butterflies in the summer of 2006, with that photo as one of my first real successes. In the year and a half since then, I've improved not only in my ability to get close to the creatures, but also in the patience and care necessary to get good, compositionally interesting shots of them. In addition, I've learned to pay much closer attention to the tiny creatures I can find everywhere just by lifting up a leaf or getting up close to a flower; not just the charismatic ones like butterflies and dragonflies, but also the beetles, grasshoppers, true bugs, and so on. I've done enough research on these creatures to start to understand their lives and relationships, and to be able to identify the more common ones pretty accurately! (One good effect of all this is that I'm no longer afraid of them--even spiders!)
